Car Insurance Under 25

25 is a magic number for car insurance.  Under age 25, you pay a lot more in premiums than than those of us over 25.  Although it seems unfair for those responsible, safe drivers who also happen to be under 25, statistics bear out the fact that these drivers tend to have more insurance claims than their older counterparts.  Quite simply, if your under 25, you’re guilty by association, and your rates will be high.
So, are you doomed?  Is there no cheap car insurance for those under 25?  Not much, but there are a few things you can do to get the lowest possible rates.

  • You can stay on your parents’ insurance.  Getting a multi-car or multi-policy discount may be your best bet.  But it’s not always the lowest price, so shop around.  Some single policies can give you a lower rate than what you can get on your parents’ policy.  Note: you have to live with your parents to get this discount.
  • You can get married.  Lower insurance rates do not warrant marriage, but if you’re getting married anyway, consider your lower insurance premiums an unexpected perk.  Congratulations!
  • You can keep your driving record clean.  The longer you go without a ticket, accident or other claim on your record, the lower your rates will be.  It generally takes 3 years before a ticket will come off your record.
  • You can maintain a great credit score.  Insurance companies use credit scores as a measure of a driver’s responsibility.  Statistics have shown that drivers with good credit history are more likely to also be good drivers.  This discount will help you the rest of your driving life, so keep on top of your bills and credit usage.
  • You can drive a cheaper car.  Expensive cars, modified cars, sports cars, and rare cars are more expensive to insure because they are more likely to be wrecked and/or more expensive to repair.  Lists are published on and offline of cheapest cars to insure.  Get one of those.
  • You can take a defensive driving course.  It makes sense that if insurance companies find you are in the most dangerous driver category, and you take a defensive driving class, they’ll give you a discount.  Not all companies offer this, so check out the savings before you take the class.
  • If you’re a full time high school or college student you can qualify for a good grades discount.  Just like with your credit score, insurance companies recognize good student are more likely to be good drivers.  Many require a “B” average or better; check with your agent to see if you qualify.
  • You can pay in advance.  Sometimes the insurance company will give you a discount for paying in advance or using their automatic payment plans.
  • You can shop around.  Use the internet to get several quotes (we recommend 3 – 5 at minimum).  Play with deductible and coverage options to find the best insurance for people under 25 you can afford.
