Cheap Car Insurance For Students

September 23rd, 2009 by admin in General Car Insurance, Young Drivers Car Insurance

In the world of car insurance shopping, students have the hardest time finding something affordable.   It has everything to do with their age and inexperience, not to mention their irresponsible peers.  Bottom line is, insurance companies see students as a big risk, so premiums are high, very, very high.  Thankfully, though, in the hunt for cheap car insurance for students, the internet is your friend, and there are a few things you can do to lower your rates.

To find the very cheapest car insurance for students, follow these guidelines:

  1. Drive a car that’s cheaper to insure.  There are several lists published, on and off line that will let you know which cars are the most expensive and the cheapest to insure.  Choose one of the cheaper ones.
  2. Stay on your parent’s insurance, or not.  You have a choice; if you’re looking to save money, find out which option is actually cheaper.
  3. Get lots of quotes.  Use the free quote forms on insurance sites to quickly and easily get lots of car insurance quotes.  If you know how much coverage you need, you can compare quotes and find the best insurance for the best price.  Remember to check out your insurance company’s ratings before purchasing the insurance—insurance from a company that can’t pay is like not having insurance at all, except it’s more expensive.
  4. Be a good driver.  Keep your record clean and you’ll have lower car insurance.  Especially avoid DUI and DWI—these are killers of people as well as your cheap car insurance.
  5. Get good grades.  Many insurance companies will offer discounts to full time college or high school students who get “good grades.”  This includes being on the dean’s list, honor roll, maintaining a certain GPA or being in the top percentages of your class.
  6. Maintain a good credit history.  Insurance companies consider people with good credit less of a risk behind the wheel of a car.
  7. Take a defensive driving course.  Anything you can do to prove you’re a better driver will earn you a discount with some insurance companies.
  8. Pay in advance.  Sometimes you can get a discount for paying the whole 6 months or year at a time.
  9. Remember there is no one cheapest car insurance for students or anyone else.  Different people will find different rates with each company they solicit for a quote.  Do your research, know what coverage you need, shop around, and you’ll find the cheapest car insurance for you.
