How to Get the Cheapest Car Insurance for Young Drivers

Most young drivers are subject to higher car insurance premiums than their older counterparts. Since many of these young drivers are students or are just starting their careers, these high premiums can make having adequate car insurance nearly impossible. Therefore, many young drivers drive without car insurance or with inadequate insurance. This is very risky and quite dangerous. Instead of making such a foolish mistake, get the cheapest car insurance for young drivers that is possible. There are several factors of a premium that a young driver has control over.

Get good grades.

Research has shown that students with good grades tend to be more responsible drivers, so keep your grades up if you are a student. Many car insurance companies will give students a discount if they maintain a B average or better. If you are a student you probably want to maintain at least a B average for a variety of other reasons, but getting a nice discount on your car insurance can be an excellent perk and reward to a job well done.

Take a driving class.

Take a driver’s education course, even if your state does not require it to obtain your driver’s license. Many insurance companies give a sizable discount to driver’s that have taken a driver’s education course.

Stay on your parents’ insurance.

Stay on your parents’ policy if you can. Many young drivers are eligible to remain on their parents’ car insurance policies until they are in their mid 20s. Remaining on your parents’ insurance policy can frequently be the best way to get the best possible car insurance rate. If you don’t live with your parents, but instead have roommates, try to arrange to be on the same policy as your roommates. Many car insurance companies prefer to have a single policy for each household. It creates less paperwork for them, and frequently leads to discounts for you. This is especially true if your roommates are good drivers.

Be a responsible driver

Be a responsible driver. No one starts the car in the morning with the intention of getting a traffic ticket or having a collision, but as a young driver you need to be especially careful on the road. The car insurance rates of young drivers are so notoriously high because statistically young drivers have more accidents, thereby forcing car insurance companies to pay out more claims, than the average driver. Ensuring that this is not the case for you can lead to lower car insurance rates.
