Inexpensive Car Insurance

November 9th, 2009 by admin in Car Insurance, cheap car insurance

Car insurance can be expensive, but if you comparison shop and buy only the options you really need, you can find inexpensive car insurance.

First, shop online to compare rates among insurance companies. There is no one, or even a group of specifically inexpensive car insurance companies. Every insurance company looks at drivers slightly differently, so the same driver will be quoted different rates by different companies.  We recommend getting at least 3 to 5 online quotes to compare.

Shopping online also lets you easily compare the impact that changing the deductible or coverage amounts will have on your premiums. You can get considerably less expensive insurance by raising your deductible or getting rid of collision coverage.  Take these steps carefully though.

To decide if you need collision coverage, consider the value of the car you are insuring. If you are driving an inexpensive car, the replacement value might not make it worth carrying collision or comprehensive coverage. Compare the difference in premiums if you drop these coverages from your policy. Do this knowing that in the event you are at fault in an accident, you will have to replace or repair your own car. Weigh the value of paying higher premiums versus whether you will be able to afford these damages.

If you cannot completely afford to drop collision coverage, you might consider increasing your deductible (the amount of money you have to pay out of pocket before your insurance coverage kicks in). This can lower your premiums while still providing you some level of protection.

Most states require that you carry liability insurance, which provides coverage for any damages you cause to the other person or property when you are at fault. The minimum required amounts vary by state, so you should make sure your policy at least meets the state’s requirements. While you can lower your premiums by carrying the bare minimum required, talk to your agent about realistic expenses you could incur, then determine whether you need to carry higher coverage. For example, if you only have $10,000 in property damage, consider that you could easily exceed that by hitting just one vehicle, and you would be responsible for anything over that amount.

Finally, make sure you are not paying for duplicate coverage. If you are a member of an auto club or have roadside assistance with your car’s warranty, you won’t need to pay extra for this protection on your car insurance. It’s also a good idea to find out what your policy covers for rental cars, so you won’t pay extra at the rental car if you’re already covered.
