Picking the Most Insurable Roof

April 26th, 2011 by Bill in Home Insurance

Texans have a lot of pride. They pride themselves on bigger cars, a bigger state, and bigger sports arenas. The states motto is “Don’t Mess With Texas.” Texas can seem pretty wonderful, but there are a few things about Texas that aren’t so great. One of those things is insurance. Home insurance in Texas is extremely expensive. The best house insurance rates in Texas are not easy to find. Because good rates in Texas tend to be few and far between, the best way to find the best rates is by shopping the price with as many companies as possible. There are a few things that house owners can do to ensure they have the broadest range of companies to choose from when shopping. One of those things is the roof.

Due to the many different types of weather that hit Texas, it’s not too difficult to figure out that roof claims in Texas are extremely common. In fact, claims for roof damage are more common in Texas than any other type of house insurance claim. So it’s no surprise that the roof is carefully looked at by all house insurance companies, especially the best house insurance companies, before insurance is written.

Roofs that are multi-layered (a roof that has had new shingles laid over the old shingles, instead of tearing the old shingles off before replacing them with new shingles) is a serious deterrent for many house insurance companies, and this will seriously limit the ability to shop insurance with multiple companies. Houston home insurance will be particularly difficult to find if the home has more than one layer of shingles.

Any unique or out-of-the-ordinary roof will also be uninsurable with many Texas companies. A flat roof, Spanish tile roof, dome-shaped roof, etc., are all unique types of roof in Texas and thus many companies either will not insure these homes, or will insure them at high premiums. The best type of roof to ensure the maximum amount of companies will to insure the home is a composition shingle roof with only one layer. If a home has this type of roof and it is in good condition (not older than 10 to 15 years), then that home is likely to field the most house insurance quotes.
