Young Drivers Car Insurance

August 14th, 2009 by admin in Young Drivers Car Insurance

If you are or if you have a young driver at home, you know their car insurance rates are among the highest out there.  And you probably understand why: young drivers have little driving experience (insurance companies like a driver to have 3-year’s driving experience before they can get a “good driver” designation and discount), and they are more likely to be impulsive, speed, and get in accidents.  It’s just a fact of life that if you are buying car insurance for young drivers, you will pay more, but there are ways to pay less, and they just might pay off for you.

  • Choose the right car.  If you’re looking for young drivers cheap car insurance you’ve got to choose the right car. Most teenagers prefer sports cars, SUVs or other high performance and expensive vehicles.  Unfortunately, these tend to be the most expensive vehicles to insure.  If your teen will drive a sedan or other simple vehicle, his or her insurance rates will be less.  Additionally, any car with added safety features will generally cost less to insure.  Look for side impact air bags, anti-lock breaks, automatic seat belts, etc.
  • Choose the right insurance policy. To find the cheapest car insurance for young drivers, you’ll have to do some research.  Start with your current insurance company.  Sometimes, adding a vehicle to your policy and getting a multi-vehicle discount will be the best way to go.  But sometimes, the insurance policy that is best for adults is not as good for young drivers.  The internet makes it really easy to shop around for insurance.  You can generally compare quotes from several companies at one website.  You may find a solo policy for your teen is the cheapest way to go.
  • Inquire about other discounts.  Sometimes you can find cheap car insurance for young drivers through applying discounts to the policy you already have.  Many insurers offer discounts for good grades, a short commute to work or school (or limited the total number of miles your teen drives), completing a driver safety class, community service (or any other proof that your young driver is a responsible citizen).
  • Keep their record clean.  Help your young driver understand that a ticket or accident on their driving record could double or triple their insurance rates, so they (or you) will pay for that mistake for years.

Always consult with an insurance expert you trust (hopefully this is your insurance agent).  Each family’s insurance needs are different, and you don’t want your young driver’s mistake on the road to cause significant financial damage to your family.  Get enough and the right insurance.
