Young Persons Car Insurance

September 29th, 2009 by admin in General Car Insurance, Young Drivers Car Insurance

Anyone searching for young persons car insurance has found out one thing: it’s expensive.  It’s expensive to insure teens and even drivers into their early 20s, and even more expensive if they are males.  Insurance companies are businesses, and they watch their bottom line.  Through statistics, insurers know young drivers, particularly males, are in experienced and more prone to the fast or aggressive driving that leads to accidents and insurance claims.

So, are you stuck paying the highest premiums you can find just because you have a young driver?  In some ways, yes; until he or she is 25, insurance rates will be higher for you, but there are a few things you can do to lower your premiums and still have good insurance.

Ways to get cheap young persons car insurance

First of all, if the young driver  lives at home, he may be able to get insurance on mom and dad’s policy which will qualify you for a multiple policy discount.  Check that premium out first.
Next, if you’re shopping for a car, search online to find out the least expensive cars to insure.  Buy one of those.  They are generally small, inexpensive, but safe cars that aren’t flashy and aren’t fast.  Expensive SUVs, sports cars, and any vehicle that has been modified or customized are more expensive to insure.

Young Persons Car Insurance Discounts

Once you know what car you’ll be driving, look for discounts. Here are some that may apply to your young driver:

  • Good student: if she’s a full time student who maintains a B average, many insurers will give you a discount.
  • Car Safety and anti-theft features: if the car has safety features such as anti-lock breaks, airbags, etc, or a car alarm or other safety features, you are less likely to cost your insurance company as much in claims.  They will reward you with lower premiums.
  • Completing a driving course: if your young driver has completed a driver safety or defensive driving class, he is, in theory, less likely to cause an accident.  You can likely lower your insurance premium with proof of completion.

Finally, be sure to get lots of quotes.  You can easily get multiple quotes from many different companies by filling out a few simple quote forms online.  Play with your quotes by choosing different mileage limits and deductibles, different cars and different safety features.  You may find you can get better coverage with an individual policy for your young driver.  Either way, there is a good auto insurance policy out there for your young driver; take the time to find it.
